BYD PH Sales Pass 2025 Total as EV Warranty Fears Grow

BYD Cars Philippines sold 28,399 units from January to August 2026, already beating its full-year 2025 total, while Reddit owners questioned battery warranty fine print and a two-month repair delay at a BYD dealership in Bicol.

The Report September 10, 2026

BYD Cars Philippines sold 28,399 vehicles from January to August 2026, a 99% increase over the same eight months of 2025 and already more than the 26,122 units it sold in all of last year, the company said on Wednesday.9095 The distributor, Mobility Access Philippines Ventures Inc., reported 4,682 units sold in August alone and a record April of 5,730 units, up 258% from April 2025.132 The announcement landed the same day a Reddit thread warned buyers that an "8-10 year battery warranty" does not promise a brand-new replacement pack, and a separate owner described a BYD vehicle sitting unrepaired at a dealership in Pili, Camarines Sur since a July accident.74

The sales figure drew the widest coverage of any single automotive item in the monitored set, running across at least five outlets: the Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, BusinessWorld, Malaya Business Insight and Manila Standard.9590132 The Inquirer's business page carried it under the headline "BYD car sales in the Philippines zoom past 2025 record," and the Star's business section ran "BYD overtakes entire 2025 sales in 8 months."9590 The company attributed the run to plug-in hybrid demand: its DM-i line sold 22,555 units from January to August, up 95% from 11,542 a year earlier, led by the Sealion 6 DM-i.90 Battery-electric sales reached 5,844 units over the same period.90

The consumer side of the conversation was smaller in volume but sharper in tone. A Reddit post in r/CarsPH warned that the fine print of long battery warranties "may state that they can replace it with a remanufactured/refurbished pack, rather than giving you a brand new battery," and drew roughly 43 likes and 31 comments, with a duplicate crosspost adding about 31 likes and 15 comments.7 A separate thread asked whether a car inoperable for three weeks without a diagnosis qualifies under the Lemon Law, noting the law requires at least four failed repair attempts.5 A third recounted a two-hour NLEX drive that stretched past seven hours because of flooding, asking how electric vehicles with low charge would fare.2

Key themes

  1. BYD passed its full 2025 sales total with four months left in the year. The brand sold 28,399 units from January to August 2026 against 26,122 for all of 2025, a 99% year-on-year increase, and reported 4,682 units in August alone.9095 Its plug-in hybrid line accounted for 22,555 of those units, up 95% year on year.90
  2. Battery warranty terms became the day's most specific consumer complaint. A widely shared Reddit post warned that 8-10 year battery coverage may replace a degraded pack with a remanufactured unit rather than a new one, and that 70% capacity is a common threshold for a claim.7 The post drew about 43 likes and 31 comments, with a crosspost adding roughly 31 likes and 15 comments.7
  3. A two-month repair delay at a named BYD dealership circulated in duplicate. Two near-identical Reddit posts described a vehicle damaged in a July accident in Bicol that remained unrepaired at Horizon Auto in Pili, with the owner citing "multiple back and forth with Casa and Insurance discussing actual damage and quotation."421 The posts named both the dealership and the insurer, Prudential Guarantee.4
  4. Lemon Law questions moved from hypothetical to procedural. One owner whose car had been undiagnosed for three weeks asked whether the case qualified under the Lemon Law, correctly noting the four-repair-attempt threshold.5 The question signals owners are reading the statute rather than only venting.
  5. Range anxiety was framed through a real flood-traffic event, not a hypothetical. A Reddit account of a two-hour NLEX trip that became a seven-hour ordeal asked how electric vehicles with partial charge would manage, drawing eight comments and divided sentiment.2
  6. Industry messaging pushed charging infrastructure as the answer. A Liveable Cities Lab event announcement cited first-half 2026 EV sales of 31,381 units, up 132.7%, and promoted the ₱60-billion Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy alongside a call for a "resilient, nationwide charging backbone."3
  7. The used-car market ran on ultra-low down payments and "sure approval" financing. Facebook listings advertised a 2026 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 at "5K DP only" and a Suzuki S-Presso at a 9k down payment, while one Xpander Cross post explicitly welcomed buyers with "CMAP? REPLEVIN? NEGATIVE BANK CREDIT? NO PROBLEM!"141660
  8. Regulators kept issuing enforcement and permit notices with little public response. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) confirmed Undas special permit applications would open September 21 to October 2, and its regional office in Davao reported roadside and airport taxi inspections.2322

How the narratives stack

Dominant. BYD's sales milestone is the day's most consequential and most widely reported automotive development. The company sold 28,399 units from January to August, beating its entire 2025 volume of 26,122 with four months to spare, and the story ran in the Inquirer, the Star, BusinessWorld, Malaya Business Insight and Manila Standard.9095132 The Inquirer reported that at this pace BYD is poised to end 2026 as the country's top-selling EV brand, while noting that Toyota Motor Philippines led hybrid sales with 12,838 units as of July, based on Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. data that does not include BYD.95 The dominance here is a property of the captured set: five outlets carried the same company statement, which is a measure of how broadly the release was picked up, not proof that no other automotive story mattered more that day.

Counter-narrative. The consumer threads on Reddit directly complicate the growth story. The battery warranty post argued that the headline "8-10 year" coverage is not a guarantee of a new pack, and the repair-delay posts described a vehicle unrepaired since July at a named dealership.74 These posts drew far less engagement than the sales release drew coverage, but they address the exact questions a first-time EV buyer would ask after reading the sales headline. The two inputs measure different things: the sales story has breadth of publication, the Reddit threads have concentrated engagement within a niche but highly informed community.

Emerging. Two threads are building without yet reaching the mainstream. First, Lemon Law literacy: owners are now citing the four-repair-attempt threshold by name, which suggests the next stage of after-sales disputes will be framed legally rather than emotionally.5 Second, the used-car financing market's tolerance for buyers with negative credit history, including replevin and CMAP cases, is being advertised openly on Facebook, which raises questions about who ultimately holds those receivables.60

Under-covered. The LTFRB's Undas permit window and the Davao enforcement inspections were reported almost entirely through official agency channels and regional broadcasters, with minimal public engagement. GMA Regional TV's North Central Luzon segment on the permits recorded 8 views and its Mindanao version 5 views, and the Inquirer's Twitter post on the announcement reached 113 views with no substantive replies.242526 The Davao inspection post drew 11 likes and one comment.22 These are not suppressed stories; they simply placed low, and the low placement is itself the finding: regulatory logistics do not move this audience.

Platform insights

  • Reddit. The platform carried the day's most substantive consumer material. The battery warranty thread drew about 43 likes and 31 comments with a crosspost adding roughly 31 likes and 15 comments, the range anxiety thread drew 4 upvotes and 8 comments, and the Lemon Law question and repair-delay posts added further threads.7254 The pattern across the day was a shift from complaint to procedure: users moved from describing problems to citing statutes and comparing oil filter part numbers for a 2018 Innova 2.8 diesel engine, where owners debated VIC C-111 versus C-114 filters and warned about counterfeit parts on Lazada.5
  • Facebook. Facebook hosted the institutional and commercial layers. The Liveable Cities Lab event post announced the 132.7% first-half EV sales increase and the ₱60-billion incentive strategy, while used-car groups ran a continuous feed of listings with almost no threaded discussion.314 The most engaged used-car post in the set, a Suzuki S-Presso listing, drew 10 likes, 15 shares and 7 loves, which is modest but well above the zero-engagement norm for the category.16
  • X (formerly Twitter). A single post on fuel prices carried the platform's automotive conversation: the Energy Department raised its 2027 diesel price outlook by 33 cents amid the Iran war, drawing 12,693 views and 11 likes.6 The Inquirer's post on the LTFRB Undas permits reached 113 views with no retweets or replies.26 X functioned as a distribution channel for headlines rather than a discussion space.
  • YouTube. Regional broadcast clips on the LTFRB permits drew 8 and 5 views respectively, with no comments.2425 The platform's automotive traffic sat with national news desks covering road incidents rather than with regulatory announcements.

Key voices and communities

EV and warranty-aware owners. Concentrated on Reddit, this group reads warranty booklets closely and shares specifics. Their central claim is that long battery coverage often means a remanufactured pack at a 70% capacity threshold rather than a new battery, and their posts are the earliest signal of what first-time buyers will ask at the dealership.7 They matter because they shape pre-purchase research for the buyers now entering the market in record numbers.

Owners in after-sales disputes. The Bicol repair case and the undiagnosed-car case represent a second group: owners who have exhausted dealership and insurer channels and are now reading the Lemon Law.45 Their posts name specific companies, which turns a private grievance into a searchable public record.

Industry and policy communicators. The Liveable Cities Lab event, featuring ACMobility's infrastructure lead, framed the day's growth statistics around charging infrastructure rather than vehicle specifications, promoting the ₱60-billion Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy and the national target of a 50% EV fleet share by 2040.3 This group sets the terms the industry prefers: ecosystem readiness rather than individual ownership risk.

Used-car dealers and financing brokers. Operating almost entirely on Facebook, this group drives the volume conversation about affordability, with down payments as low as ₱5,000 and claims of one-day approval.1460 Their messaging sets price expectations that authorized dealers must answer.

Regulators and regional broadcasters. The LTFRB and its regional offices, amplified by GMA Regional TV and other regional outlets, produced the day's administrative news: the September 21 to October 2 Undas permit window, new TNVS slots in Metro Manila, Ilocos and Bicol, and Davao enforcement inspections.232224

Narrative streams

BYD's eight-month sales beat its entire 2025, and plug-in hybrids did the work

BYD Cars Philippines sold 28,399 units from January to August 2026, a 99% increase over the same period in 2025 and more than the 26,122 units it sold in the whole of last year.9095 August alone accounted for 4,682 units, and April set a monthly record of 5,730 units, up 258% year on year.132 The composition matters more than the total: 22,555 of the eight-month figure came from DM-i plug-in hybrids, up 95% from 11,542 units a year earlier, with the Sealion 6 DM-i the single best-selling model.90 Battery-electric sales reached 5,844 units.90

Plug-in hybrids occupy a specific position in the Philippine market. They run on battery power for short trips but switch to a gasoline engine when the charge runs low, which removes the charging-station dependency that pure electric vehicles carry. That makes them easier to sell to buyers who lack home charging or who regularly drive long provincial routes. BYD's own statement framed the result as evidence that "electric vehicles have entered the mainstream in the Philippines."95

The read for the sector: BYD's growth is now large enough to change how competitors plan. Toyota Motor Philippines held the hybrid lead with 12,838 units as of July, according to Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. data that excludes BYD, so the two are competing for the same efficiency-minded buyer through different technologies.95 For distributors still deciding how aggressively to bring in plug-in hybrids, BYD's numbers are the strongest available argument that the segment has moved past early adopters.

Battery warranty fine print became the day's sharpest consumer warning

A Reddit post in r/CarsPH told buyers that the "8-10 year battery warranty" commonly advertised on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles does not guarantee a brand-new replacement. The post stated that "the fine print may state that they can replace it with a remanufactured/refurbished pack, rather than giving you a brand new battery," and noted that 70% capacity is a standard threshold for a claim.7 It drew about 43 likes and 31 comments, with a duplicate crosspost adding roughly 31 likes and 15 comments, making it the highest-engagement item in the consumer set.7

A 2026 Deloitte study cited in separate coverage found that 41% of Filipinos name the eventual cost of battery replacement as a primary concern when considering an electric vehicle.83 That figure explains why the warranty thread resonated: it addresses the single largest stated barrier to adoption, and it does so with a specific, checkable claim about contract language rather than a general worry.

The read for the sector: brands selling electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the Philippines now face a documentation problem, not a technology problem. A buyer who reads that thread will arrive at a showroom asking what happens at 70% capacity and whether the replacement pack is new or remanufactured. Dealers without a prepared, plain-language answer will lose the sale to whoever has one. The same dynamic appeared in a separate item: VinFast is marketing a 10-year vehicle and battery coverage plan explicitly as the answer to battery-replacement anxiety, which shows at least one competitor has already decided warranty terms are a sales weapon.83

A two-month repair delay at a named dealership turned into a public record

Two near-identical Reddit posts described a vehicle damaged in a July accident in Bicol that had sat unrepaired at Horizon Auto in Pili, a BYD dealership, with the owner reporting "multiple back and forth with Casa and Insurance discussing actual damage and quotation. No repair was done yet."421 The owner said they had escalated to the dealership's point of contact and to insurance regional contacts in Manila and Naga and was still at "wits end" over whom to chase.4 The posts named both the dealership and the insurer, Prudential Guarantee.4

A related thread described a different car inoperable for three weeks with no diagnosis or timeline from the dealer, prompting the owner to ask whether the Lemon Law applies.5 The Philippine Lemon Law, or Republic Act 10642, protects buyers of brand-new motor vehicles against manufacturing defects and generally requires a minimum number of repair attempts within a set period before a claim can proceed; the owner in the thread correctly noted the four-attempt threshold.5

The read for the sector: after-sales service has become a first-order reputational issue that cannot be separated from brand perception. The posts drew only one or two upvotes each, but they were duplicated on the same day, they name specific companies, and they are now searchable by any prospective buyer researching that dealership. For brands expanding their electric lineups, the repair turnaround time at accredited service centers will shape the brand narrative more than any advertising campaign, because the buyers arriving through aggressive sales pushes are first-time owners with no prior relationship to the service network.

Range anxiety moved from hypothetical to a specific flood-traffic scenario

A Reddit thread asked directly: "EV range anxiety: Have you experienced draining your battery before reaching a charging station?"2 The author described a two-hour NLEX drive that became more than seven hours because of flooding, and asked how electric vehicles with incomplete charge would manage, writing "paano yung mga EV na hindi naka full charge at naubusan ng battery."2 The post drew 4 upvotes and 8 comments, with sentiment split; one commenter asked, "After that experience, are you still in favor of EVs?" and others responded with arguments about infrastructure growth.2

The industry's answer arrived the same day through a Liveable Cities Lab event announcement, which reported that first-half 2026 EV sales surged 132.7% to 31,381 units, driven by fuel price volatility, and reaffirmed the national target of a 50% EV fleet share by 2040 alongside the ₱60-billion Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy.3 The event featured ACMobility's Carla Buencamino addressing the need for a "resilient, nationwide charging backbone," directly targeting the anxiety the Reddit thread described.3

The read for the sector: the sales statistics and the consumer fear are both accurate and they describe different things. Sales are rising because fuel is expensive and incentives exist; anxiety is rising because the charging network is still thin outside Metro Manila and because Philippine traffic can turn a short trip into a long one without warning. Brands that publish practical guidance on managing charge during extended delays, and that can point to specific charging locations along common routes, will convert more of the buyers the sales data says are arriving.

The used-car market ran on ₱5,000 down payments and "sure approval" financing

Facebook dealer groups carried a continuous feed of listings built around minimal upfront cash. A 2026 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLX was advertised at "5K DP only!! easy requirements... Fast approval!!" and a Suzuki S-Presso at a 9k down payment with 16k monthly.1416 One Xpander Cross listing went further, stating "CMAP? REPLEVIN? NEGATIVE BANK CREDIT? NO PROBLEM! SURE APPROVAL!"60 CMAP refers to the Credit Management Association of the Philippines, which maintains a database of delinquent borrowers; replevin is the legal process by which a lender reclaims a vehicle after default. Advertising acceptance of buyers with those histories means the sellers are reaching borrowers that conventional banks have already declined.

Against that, established dealerships positioned themselves on verification. Car Empire in Las Piñas listed a 2024 Mitsubishi Strada and a 2022 Montero Sport with detailed financing tables and invitations to bring an independent mechanic, while All Cars in Makati advertised a "Money Back Guarantee on Fake Documents" and "No Mileage Tampering Guaranteed" on a 2024 Honda City.555657 Private owners joined the same theme: a Tarlac seller of a Toyota Vios asked buyers to "bring your most trusted mechanic or scanner for your own assurance."62

The read for the sector: the trust signals are the story. Sellers would not guarantee against odometer tampering and fake documents unless buyers had learned to fear both, and the volume of near-new 2025 units with 2,000 to 20,000 kilometers on the odometer suggests rapid turnover that authorized dealers should track. For lenders and manufacturers, the open advertising of approval for previously declined borrowers is a consumer-protection question waiting for a regulator to notice, and the reputational risk lands on whichever brands those vehicles carry.

Regulators opened the Undas permit window and ran inspections in Davao

The LTFRB confirmed that special permit applications for buses serving All Saints' and All Souls' Day, known locally as Undas, will open September 21 and close October 2, following a directive from Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez.23 Acting Chairman Greg Pua Jr. said the early window gives agency personnel time to review unit documents, particularly roadworthiness, and that the goal is to prevent passenger stranding during the annual migration to the provinces.23 The announcement was carried by GMA Regional TV in Tagalog and Cebuano broadcasts and by the Inquirer on X.242526

Separately, the LTFRB's regional office in Davao reported roadside and unit inspections conducted on September 8, prompted by a complaint about alleged out-of-line operations involving Catitipan drivers along the Landmark route, plus taxi inspections at Davao City International Airport.22 The agency also issued a public advisory listing official TNVS application fees and warning against fixers offering expedited processing, directing the public to the 1342 hotline.28

The read for the sector: the regulatory calendar is now set for the fourth quarter, and bus operators have a defined window to file. The enforcement activity in Davao shows the agency is working outside Metro Manila, which matters for fleet operators who assume scrutiny is concentrated in the capital. The anti-fixer advisory is the most consequential item for anyone transacting with the agency, because it establishes the official fee schedule as the benchmark against which any third-party offer can be judged.

New electric models kept arriving, led by Geely's October launch

Geely Motor Philippines confirmed it will launch the Monjaro EM-i in October 2026, likely during the Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit, as its second model using the EM-i Super Hybrid system and its first with electric all-wheel drive.94125 Government filings cited in coverage show a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with dual electric motors producing a combined 416 horsepower, a 29.8-kilowatt-hour battery, 130 kilometers of electric-only range and 1,095 kilometers combined.94 The 14th Philippine EV Summit itself is scheduled for October 22 to 24 at the SMX Convention Center, with registration now open under the theme "Driving ASEAN Forward: Building an Integrated Electric Mobility Ecosystem."102

Deepal, meanwhile, signed five new dealership partners and has four more locations in the pipeline, covering Commonwealth and Quezon City, Plaridel in Bulacan, Davao, Sumulong Highway in Rizal and Calamba in Laguna, with Manila Bay, Alabang, Pampanga and Cebu to follow.88 Kia Philippines marked World EV Day by promoting its EV5 and EV9 and the upcoming EV3 and PV5, supported by parent ACMobility's charging network.121 Grab expanded its electric taxi service in Iloilo through partnerships with Quarry Taxi and MOMOFED Taxi, citing driver reports that electric vehicles can cut operating costs per kilometer by up to 75% compared with combustion-engine taxis at daily mileage of 250 to 300 kilometers.114

The read for the sector: the model pipeline and the dealer network are expanding faster than the charging network, which is the gap the consumer threads keep pointing at. For brands launching in October, the buyers arriving at showrooms will have read the warranty and range discussions, and the launch messaging that answers those questions directly will outperform specification sheets.

Conversation trajectory

Over the next 2 to 4 weeks, expect the warranty thread to resurface around the Geely and Kia launches. The Monjaro EM-i arrives in October and Kia is promoting the EV3 and PV5, both of which will face the same battery-coverage questions raised in the Reddit thread.94121 Watch for whether either brand publishes plain-language warranty terms before launch; if they do not, the first buyer question in comment sections will be about replacement packs and capacity thresholds. The observation window is the launch period through the Philippine EV Summit on October 22 to 24.102

The Undas permit window from September 21 to October 2 will produce a measurable engagement test. Applications open on a fixed date, and the volume of operator questions in the following days will show whether the LTFRB's fairness messaging reached the people it was meant for.23 Watch the agency's Facebook pages and the 1342 hotline reports for signs of fixer activity during the window, since the anti-fixer advisory was issued specifically to preempt it.28

The Bicol repair case is a candidate for escalation. The owner has already escalated to multiple contacts without resolution, and the posts name both the dealership and the insurer.4 If the vehicle remains unrepaired past the point where the owner files a formal Lemon Law complaint, the case becomes a citable example in every subsequent after-sales dispute thread. The trigger to watch is any post announcing a formal complaint or a Department of Trade and Industry filing.

Fuel prices remain the underlying driver and the next data point is imminent. The Energy Department raised its 2027 diesel price outlook by 33 cents amid the Iran war, and Philippine coverage reported an expected pump price increase of nearly ₱4 per liter for gasoline and about ₱2.50 for diesel and kerosene in the coming week.6109 The LTFRB is studying raising the diesel discount for jeepney and UV Express drivers to ₱12 per liter.109 Sustained increases push more buyers toward electrified options, which feeds directly into the sales trend BYD reported.

Trigger events to watch: the September 21 opening of Undas permit applications; the October launch of the Geely Monjaro EM-i and the Philippine EV Summit on October 22 to 24; the release of September 2026 vehicle sales data in the following weeks; and any regulatory response to the "sure approval" financing advertisements on Facebook.239410260

Response guidance

Prepare warranty answers before the October launches. Brands launching electric or plug-in hybrid models should publish a plain-language explanation of what the battery warranty covers, what capacity threshold triggers a claim, and whether the replacement is new or remanufactured. The Reddit thread that drew the most engagement in the consumer set asked exactly these questions, and the 41% of Filipinos who cite battery replacement cost as a primary concern will ask them at the showroom.783

Treat repair turnaround time as a brand metric. The Bicol case shows that a two-month delay at a named dealership becomes a searchable public record that prospective buyers will find. Dealership networks should set and publish maximum response times for insurance quotation approvals and diagnosis, and service staff should be able to explain the Lemon Law's four-attempt threshold in plain terms without interpreting the law or promising outcomes.45

Answer range anxiety with specific locations, not general assurances. The NLEX flood-traffic thread described a real scenario that will recur during monsoon season.2 Communications that name actual charging stations along common routes, and that give practical guidance on managing charge during extended delays, will do more than statements about network expansion. The Liveable Cities Lab event's focus on a "resilient, nationwide charging backbone" is the right frame; it needs specific locations attached.3

Address the used-car financing advertisements directly. The open marketing of approval for buyers with CMAP and replevin histories creates reputational risk that lands on the brands those vehicles carry.60 Manufacturers and industry associations should publish consumer education on total financing cost, including insurance and fees that the advertised down payments exclude, and should promote certified pre-owned programs that offer verified mileage and documented service history as the alternative to informal guarantees.5766

Use the Undas window to reinforce official channels. With applications open September 21 to October 2, operators will be searching for guidance.23 Messaging that repeats the official fee schedule and the 1342 hotline, and that warns against intermediaries charging for expedited processing, protects both the agency's credibility and the operators who might otherwise pay for help they do not need.28

Monitor the fuel price trajectory as the demand driver. The projected pump price increase and the LTFRB's review of the diesel discount for public transport drivers will shape both consumer interest in electrified vehicles and operating costs for commercial fleets.109 Communications tied to total cost of ownership will land better while pump prices are rising than at any other time.
