Peso Hits 63.615 as BSP Signals More Rate Hikes
The peso closed at a record 63.615 to the dollar after the central bank's 50-basis-point hike, and analysts expect further increases. Banks reported mixed earnings, UnionBank moved to absorb its digital units, and Mynt's shares traded below their offer price in the first week.
The Philippine peso closed at ₱63.615 to the US dollar on Friday, October 23, its weakest level on record and the fourth straight session in which it set a new low, after the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) raised its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point the day before.7594 The currency move and the rate decision together set the terms for the day's banking conversation: lenders reported third-quarter earnings, UnionBank of the Philippines announced it would fold its digital bank and fintech arm back into the parent company, and the first-week trading of GCash parent Mynt Inc. gave retail investors their first look at how the record listing was performing.735520
The peso's slide came despite the BSP's larger-than-expected hike, which lifted its policy rate to 5.5 percent, the fourth consecutive increase this year.129 The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) fell 0.88 percent, or 51.10 points, to 5,728.63, extending losses after the rate move.71 On social media, the day's most-engaged banking posts were not about the peso at all: a Facebook post criticizing GCash's valuation at "18x PE multiple" drew 177 comments, 159 shares and 304 likes, and a Reddit thread on UnionBank's plan to absorb UnionDigital drew 120 likes and 29 comments on a claim that half of the digital bank's workforce had been laid off.2758 The gap between the institutional story in the business pages and the retail-investor and customer-service conversation online is the day's defining feature.
Key themes
- The peso closed at ₱63.615 to the dollar, a record low, after the BSP's 50-basis-point hike. The currency weakened 9.5 centavos from Thursday's previous record close of ₱63.52, and touched an intraday low of ₱63.62.75 Trading volume eased to $1.3 billion from $1.7 billion the previous session.82
- Analysts expect at least one more BSP rate increase in December, with some seeing tightening into early 2027. BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions, forecast a 25-basis-point increase in December that would take the policy rate to 5.75 percent, revising its earlier forecast of 5.50 percent.89 Bank of America's Jojo Gonzales expects quarter-point hikes at the December and February meetings.79
- UnionBank will absorb UnionDigital Bank and UBX into the parent company, subject to BSP approval. The bank said the move aims to improve efficiency and expand digital services while maintaining continuity for existing users.55 No approval date or transition schedule was stated.56
- Mynt's shares ended their first trading week below the ₱16.60 offer price. Daily Tribune Business reported a ₱16.29 close on October 23, and a separate post put the price at ₱16.27 on the fourth trading day.2021 The stock had reached ₱16.76 on its debut before closing at ₱16.60.13
- BPI named Maria Cristina "Ginbee" Go as its next president and CEO, effective April 26, 2027. Go, who has worked at BPI for 23 years and heads its consumer banking business, would be the first woman to lead the 175-year-old bank in that role.4748
- UnionBank, PNB and LandBank all reported higher nine-month profits. UnionBank's net income rose 53 percent to ₱9.9 billion, PNB's rose 15 percent to ₱21.3 billion, and LandBank's rose 7.6 percent to ₱37.5 billion.738077
- The National Bureau of Investigation raided a suspected scam hub in Subic, detaining about 230 Vietnamese nationals. The operation allegedly ran round-the-clock shifts with a dedicated payments desk that funneled funds through bank and e-wallet accounts.86137
- The PSE is courting Maya for a listing after GCash's debut. PSE president and CEO Ramon Monzon said Maya's parent PLDT Inc. wants a local IPO, while foreign investors including Tencent and KKR may prefer an overseas listing.133
How the narratives stack
Dominant: The peso's record close and the BSP's rate decision dominated the business coverage in this set. At least a dozen items across Inquirer, Philstar, Manila Times, Business Mirror and television reports covered the currency and the rate hike, with the peso story alone drawing coverage worth an estimated ₱1.5 million in advertising-equivalent value across the items captured here.387594136 The coverage was consistent on the facts: the peso closed at ₱63.615, the PSEi fell 0.88 percent, and analysts expect more hikes. The dominant frame was that the central bank's aggressive move had not stopped the currency's slide, and that inflation — which jumped to 7.2 percent in September from 6.1 percent in August, well above the BSP's 2 to 4 percent target — was the reason.129
Counter-narrative: The social conversation around GCash and UnionBank ran against the institutional tone of the business pages. A Facebook post by a personal-finance creator presented a sharply critical valuation view of GCash at "18x PE multiple at 5.83," drawing 177 comments and 159 shares, while a Reddit thread on UnionBank's restructuring drew 120 likes and 29 comments on a claim that half of UnionDigital's workforce had been laid off.2758 These posts treated the day's banking news as a consumer and investor question — is the stock worth buying, is the digital bank still operating — rather than as a macro story about the peso.
Emerging: The PSE's effort to bring Maya to the local market is an early signal of how the GCash listing might change the exchange's pipeline. Monzon said there was no target date yet, and that Maya's foreign investors may prefer an overseas listing for a better valuation.83 The story is small in volume but consequential for the local capital market: if Maya follows GCash, the PSE would have two of the country's largest digital financial platforms listed in Manila.
Under-covered: The customer-service complaints about Metrobank — a disputed CAD 1,027.23 credit-card charge after a fake payment link, a ₱300 monthly deduction from a remittance account, and a question about deposit notifications — appeared only in social posts and drew little engagement.132 The disputed charge, worth about ₱46,470.56, is the clearest immediate customer-risk signal in the set, but it did not surface in any of the news items captured here.
Platform insights
- Facebook: The platform carried the day's most-engaged banking posts. A personal-finance creator's critical valuation post on GCash drew 304 likes, 159 shares and 177 comments, making it the single most-engaged item in the set.27 A Daily Tribune Business post on Mynt's first-week close drew attention to the stock's below-offer price, and a post by a financial commentator warned about possible limits to share-price support.2021 Facebook also carried the Metrobank customer's account of the disputed credit-card charge, though that post drew only two comments.1
- Reddit: The r/DigitalbanksPh and r/PHDigitalBanks_ communities drove the UnionBank discussion, with users asking whether UnionDigital would cease to operate as a separate bank and citing its recent SSS Loan Lite service as evidence it was still active.5657 A thread on r/JobsPhilippines linked the restructuring to layoffs and drew 120 likes and 29 comments.58 A separate Reddit post on Metrobank's travel credit cards drew 20 comments and 15 likes, with the user praising the airline-mile earning options while calling the bank's app slow.2
- X: The platform carried a small number of financial-news posts, including a Bilyonaryo post summarizing the UnionBank consolidation as a move toward a leaner business and a post on the peso and stock index finishing lower.5941 Engagement on these posts was not reported in the material.
- YouTube: Business channels carried the institutional story. Bilyonaryo News Channel's interview with BDO Capital president Ed Francisco asked whether Mynt's record offering could help revive the stock market amid a weak peso and cautious foreign investors, and One News PH's MoneyTalks segment presented GCash as a possible route to wider stock-market access.196
Key voices and communities
Retail investors and personal-finance creators. This group turned the GCash listing into a practical investing question, with posts explaining how to open a brokerage account through GStocks PH and warning that investing involves risk.25 Their framing was skeptical of the valuation and focused on whether the stock's early trading justified optimism. They matter because they are the audience the PSE is trying to reach with its push to bring more companies to the local market.
Digital-banking communities on Reddit. Users in r/DigitalbanksPh and r/PHDigitalBanks_ focused on what UnionBank's restructuring means for UnionDigital's app and customers, and on whether the digital bank would continue to operate.5657 Their questions were practical — will my account change, will the app still work — and they matter because they represent the customer base UnionBank says it will keep serving through the transition.
Bank economists and research firms. BPI lead economist Emilio Neri Jr. said the tightening cycle is "likely not over" and that further tightening in the first quarter of 2027 "remains possible" depending on El Niño's inflationary impact.136 BMI and Bank of America both forecast more hikes. These voices matter because they shape how businesses and households plan their borrowing.
The central bank and the PSE. BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. said the central bank was not raising rates to support a specific exchange rate, though it could intervene to limit sharp currency swings that might fuel inflation.38 PSE president Monzon used the GCash listing to make the case for Maya. These institutions set the terms of the day's stories.
Bank customers with service complaints. Metrobank customers raised questions about a disputed credit-card charge, a monthly account deduction and deposit notifications.132 Their posts were individual experiences, not a coordinated campaign, but they point to the service issues that banks face at the retail level.
Narrative streams
The peso's record close and the BSP's fourth straight hike
The peso closed at ₱63.615 to the dollar on Friday, 9.5 centavos weaker than Thursday's record close of ₱63.52, after the BSP raised its benchmark rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 percent.7538 The rate increase was the fourth consecutive this year and the biggest in over three years, and it surprised the market: only two of 20 economists polled by the Inquirer anticipated the move.79134 Remolona said the central bank was responding to broader price pressures, with inflation at 7.2 percent in September, well above the BSP's 2 to 4 percent target, and core inflation at a three-year high of 4.7 percent.129
The peso's slide continued despite the hike, and analysts attributed the weakness to a combination of factors. RCBC chief economist Michael Ricafort cited global crude oil prices at new five-month highs and "some market concerns over recent signals on a possible large US attack on Iran after the November 3, 2026 US mid-term elections."94 A currency trader said the BSP's affirmation that it does not target a specific exchange rate level had added to the currency's weakness, as speculators tested the central bank's tolerance for further depreciation.94 The peso also weakened even as the dollar softened amid concerns about the sustainability of the artificial-intelligence-driven investment boom and less hawkish signals from Federal Reserve officials.82
The stock market felt the effect. The PSEi fell 0.88 percent to 5,728.63, with Philstocks Financial research manager Japhet Tantiangco attributing the decline to the rate hike, which could help contain inflation but could also further slow economic growth.71 Regina Capital's Luis Limlingan said investors were rearranging their portfolios to account for the rate hike.134 The peso story drew heavy coverage across the business pages, with the items captured here carrying an estimated ₱1.5 million in advertising-equivalent value — the cost of buying the same space as paid advertising, not a measure of readership.387594
For banks and their customers, the immediate consequence is higher borrowing costs. The policy rate serves as the central bank's main tool for influencing borrowing costs and controlling inflation; higher rates make loans more expensive, helping temper consumer spending and business investment to ease price pressures over time.136 BPI's Neri said the tightening cycle is "likely not over" and that another rate hike in December is possible, with further tightening in the first quarter of 2027 depending on El Niño's impact on food prices.136 BMI forecast the policy rate to end the year at 5.75 percent.89 For households with variable-rate loans and for businesses planning capital spending, the cost of credit is likely to rise further before it stabilizes.
UnionBank folds its digital bank and fintech arm into the parent
UnionBank of the Philippines announced on October 23 that it plans to bring digital bank UnionDigital and fintech unit UBX into the parent bank's operations, subject to approval from the BSP and other regulators.55 The bank said the move aims to improve efficiency and expand digital services while maintaining continuity for existing users.56 No approval date or transition schedule was stated, and the effects on UnionDigital's app and operations remain unclear.57
The announcement prompted Reddit users to ask what the restructuring would mean for UnionDigital's banking operations, app and customers. One user questioned whether UnionDigital would cease to operate as a separate digital bank, citing the recent launch of its SSS Loan Lite service.56 Another post linked the plan to reported job cuts at UnionDigital and UBX, saying that half of UnionDigital's workforce had been laid off; the post drew 120 likes and 29 comments.58 The material does not establish that figure independently.
The restructuring came the same day UnionBank reported its nine-month net income rose 53 percent to ₱9.9 billion, with net revenues up 8 percent to ₱65.5 billion and a retail customer base exceeding 19.5 million.73 Net interest margin widened by 34 basis points to 6.9 percent, which the bank attributed largely to a 5-percent increase in current account and savings account deposits.73 The combination of strong earnings and a restructuring suggests the bank is consolidating its digital operations after a period of separate build-out.
For UnionDigital customers, the practical question is whether their accounts, app and services will change. UnionBank says existing users' services will continue through the approval and transition process, but the material does not say whether the UnionDigital brand will survive or how accounts will be migrated.56 For the digital-banking sector, the move is a signal that the standalone digital-bank model is being reassessed by at least one of its largest players. The BSP's approval process will be the next milestone, and no date has been set.
Mynt's first week ends below its offer price
Mynt Inc., the parent company of GCash, began trading on the Philippine Stock Exchange on October 20 after raising ₱60.9 billion in the largest IPO in Philippine history.13 President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the listing ceremony in Taguig City, and the stock traded under the ticker GCASH.14 Mynt offered shares at ₱16.60 each; on its first trading day, GCASH reached ₱16.76 before closing at ₱16.60, with about ₱4.33 billion worth of shares traded.13
By the end of its first trading week, the stock was below its offer price. Daily Tribune Business reported a ₱16.29 close on October 23, and a separate post put the price at ₱16.27 on the fourth trading day.2021 The post said UBS, the designated stabilizing agent, could buy up to 1.2 billion shares for as long as 30 calendar days, and that it was unclear whether the available buying capacity was running low.21 A stabilizing agent is a bank that can buy shares in the aftermarket to support the price after a listing.
The listing gave individual users a route to buy Mynt shares through GStocks PH, an investing service in the GCash app, with purchases starting at 100 shares for ₱660.3435 A Facebook post on October 23 described how fully verified GCash users could open a brokerage account through GStocks PH, while warning that investing involves risk.25 Another post presented a sharply critical valuation view and drew 177 comments, 159 shares and 304 likes.27
For retail investors, the first week's performance is a reminder that a record IPO does not guarantee a rising share price. The stock's close below its offer price means investors who bought at ₱16.60 are holding a loss, and the stabilizing agent's buying capacity is a temporary support that will end after 30 days. For the PSE, the listing is still a landmark: Monzon said the exchange hopes Mynt's experience will encourage other companies to list locally, and he is now courting Maya.83 For GCash users who bought shares through the app, the experience may shape whether they invest again.
BPI names its first woman CEO as earnings slip
BPI named Maria Cristina "Ginbee" Go as its next president and chief executive officer on October 22, effective April 26, 2027, succeeding TG Limcaoco, subject to required approvals.4345 Go has worked at BPI for 23 years and heads its consumer banking business; she previously led BPI Family Savings Bank.49 The appointment would make her the first woman to lead BPI as president and CEO in its 175-year history.48
The appointment drew coverage beyond the business pages. Esquire Philippines framed its coverage around Go's background, calling her a "Harvard-Trained Banker" in its headline.52 Miriam College congratulated Go as a member of its 1986 high school class and said her achievement made the community proud.54 The Filipino Times highlighted the gender milestone.53
The leadership news came alongside BPI's nine-month results: net income of ₱48.9 billion, down 3.2 percent from ₱50.5 billion a year earlier, with revenue up 9.8 percent to ₱156.3 billion and provisions for potential credit losses up 69.2 percent to ₱19.9 billion.49 The bank attributed earnings pressure to higher operating expenses and provisions.49 BPI also said the merger of BPI Direct BanKo and Legazpi Savings Bank took effect on October 1, 2026, with BanKo as the surviving entity.49
For BPI's customers and investors, the succession is a planned transition with a long lead time: Limcaoco is expected to remain on the board and take senior roles in other Ayala Group companies, and Go takes over in April 2027.47 The earnings figures show the bank managing higher costs and provisions while growing revenue, a pattern that will shape the environment Go inherits. For the sector, the appointment is a milestone in gender representation at the top of Philippine banking, and it drew coverage across business, lifestyle and alumni channels.
Banks report higher nine-month profits as lending grows
Three banks reported higher nine-month profits on October 23. UnionBank's net income rose 53 percent to ₱9.9 billion, with consumer loans accounting for 62 percent of its loan portfolio and net interest income up 9 percent to ₱51.9 billion.73 PNB's net income rose 15 percent to ₱21.3 billion, with gross loans up 13 percent to ₱793 billion and return on equity improving to 11.6 percent from 11 percent.80 LandBank's net income rose 7.6 percent to ₱37.5 billion, reversing a 4-percent decline in the first half, as stronger interest earnings and foreign exchange gains helped offset the impact of waived digital transfer fees.77
PNB President and CEO Edwin Bautista said the bank's "AI initiatives are beginning to deliver benefits."93 LandBank President and CEO Lynette Ortiz had earlier said the bank was "making every effort" to offset the income lost from waived fees while meeting its developmental and financial inclusion mandates.77 LandBank permanently waived fees on person-to-person online fund transfers, a move that supports financial inclusion but reduces fee income.
The earnings reports show that Philippine banks are growing lending even as the central bank raises rates. For borrowers, the combination of higher policy rates and growing loan books means credit is expanding but becoming more expensive. For the banks, the test in coming quarters will be whether wider margins and loan growth can offset higher provisions and the impact of rate increases on borrowers' ability to repay.
The NBI raids a Subic scam hub with a payments desk
The National Bureau of Investigation raided a suspected online scam hub at the UPower Building 2 in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone on October 22, detaining about 230 individuals, predominantly Vietnamese nationals along with a Filipina human-resource manager.86 The operation was carried out under a warrant from the Olongapo City Regional Trial Court Branch 73, citing alleged violations of Republic Act 12010, the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act, and Republic Act 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.137
NBI Director Melvin Matibag said evidence recovered indicated the hub operated like a business, with round-the-clock shifts and a dedicated payments desk that processed deposits and withdrawals and funneled funds through a network of bank and e-wallet accounts.137 "We are working overtime in our fight against scam hubs and transnational online fraud," Matibag said. "We will not stop at seizing computers and scripts. We will look into bank accounts, e-wallets, and the people who rent them out."140
The raid connects to the banking sector through the payments infrastructure the scam allegedly used. The Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act, which took effect in 2024, gives the BSP and law enforcement new tools to investigate financial accounts used in scams, including the ability to freeze them. For banks and e-wallet providers, the case is a reminder that their account-opening and monitoring systems are part of the front line against transnational fraud. The NBI is tracing the financial accounts allegedly used by the operation as it prepares complaints against those who organized, managed and financed the hub.137
Metrobank customers raise card and account concerns
A Facebook user said a fake payment link had led to a Metrobank credit-card charge of CAD 1,027.23, which the user valued at about ₱46,470.56.1 The user said they had called Metrobank and emailed a dispute form while the charge remained pending, then asked whether it could be reversed.1 The post drew two comments, but their content is not described in the material.
Separately, a Reddit user reported that ₱300 had been deducted from a Metrobank remittance account since August, despite no remittance deposits in the previous two months, and asked what to do; the post received two comments.3 Another Reddit user asked whether Metrobank savings-account holders could receive notifications when money arrived, but the post had no comments.2 A Reddit user seeking advice about Metrobank's travel credit cards described a combination of two cards for earning airline miles and said the bank's app was slow compared with other banking apps; the post drew 20 comments and 15 likes.2
These are individual customer experiences, not confirmed patterns. The disputed charge is the clearest immediate risk signal: the cardholder says the amount remains pending after a dispute was filed, and the post does not establish whether Metrobank will reverse it.1 For the bank, the posts point to the service issues that matter to customers — fraud response, fee transparency and app performance — even as the product's airline-mile earning options draw praise.2
Conversation trajectory
The BSP's December meeting. The Monetary Board's next policy meeting is in December, and BMI, Bank of America and BPI all expect at least a 25-basis-point increase.8979136 Watch whether the BSP delivers another hike and whether the peso stabilizes or continues to set record lows. The peso's movement in the days after the December decision will show whether the market sees the tightening cycle nearing its end.
UnionBank's regulatory approval. The BSP and other regulators must approve UnionBank's plan to absorb UnionDigital and UBX. No date has been set.56 Watch for BSP announcements and for UnionBank statements on how customer accounts and the UnionDigital app will be handled. The layoff claims from Reddit remain unverified and should be checked against company statements.
Mynt's share price after the stabilization period. UBS can buy up to 1.2 billion shares for as long as 30 calendar days from the listing, a period that ends in mid-November.21 Watch whether the stock holds above its ₱16.60 offer price after that support ends, and whether the PSE's push for Maya gains traction.
Maya's listing plans. Monzon said there is no target date for Maya's listing, and that the company's foreign investors may prefer an overseas offering.83 Watch for statements from PLDT and Maya on whether they pursue a local or dual listing.
The NBI's financial tracing. The NBI said it will look into bank accounts and e-wallets used by the Subic scam hub.140 Watch for complaints filed against account holders and for any BSP action on the financial institutions involved.

Response guidance
On the peso and rate hikes: Explain to customers what a higher policy rate means for their loans and deposits in plain terms — variable-rate borrowers will see higher interest costs, while savers may see better deposit rates. Avoid predicting the peso's direction; cite the BSP's stated rationale and the range of analyst forecasts.
On UnionBank's restructuring: If you serve UnionDigital customers, direct them to official UnionBank channels for account-continuity information and avoid repeating unverified layoff figures. The bank has said services will continue through the transition, and that is the confirmed position.
On the GCash and Mynt listing: Separate the confirmed facts — the ₱60.9 billion raise, the ₱16.60 offer price, the first-week close below offer — from speculation about the stock's future. If you discuss the listing with retail investors, note that the stabilizing agent's support is temporary and that share prices can fall below offer prices.
On scam and fraud reports: The Subic raid and the Metrobank disputed-charge post both point to the importance of fraud awareness. Remind customers to verify payment links, use official dispute channels, and check account notifications. Do not treat individual social-media complaints as confirmed patterns; refer to official bank statements for specific cases.
On BPI's leadership change: The appointment is confirmed but subject to approvals and takes effect in April 2027. Avoid speculating about strategy changes under the new CEO; cite the bank's stated transition plan and the confirmed earnings figures separately.
On social-media engagement: The most-engaged posts in this set were critical or questioning — the GCash valuation post and the UnionBank layoff thread. Monitor these conversations for customer concerns, but respond with verified information rather than engaging with unverified claims.
