Peso Hits Record Low as Remittances Reach 7-Month High

The peso closed at a record low of ₱62.86 to the dollar while overseas Filipino remittances rose to $3.24 billion in July, their highest in seven months. GCash's planned ₱92.3-billion listing and a central bank warning on impersonation scams also drew attention.

The Report September 15, 2026

The Philippine peso closed at ₱62.86 against the United States dollar on Monday, September 14, its weakest level on record and the second straight trading day of decline, as global oil prices climbed on continued tensions in the Middle East5053. The currency lost 18 centavos from its previous record low of ₱62.68, set the previous Friday53. A trader quoted in the same report wrote that "63 Peso are clearly within reach," adding that the peso remains under pressure from a strong dollar, high oil prices and persistent local demand for dollars, but that reaching 63 is different from staying there50. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the country's central bank, is expected to watch for disorderly movements at that level, the trader said50.

On the same day, the BSP reported that cash remittances — money sent home by overseas Filipinos through banks — reached $3.24 billion in July, up 1.9 percent from $3.18 billion in July 2025 and the highest monthly total since December 2025's $3.52 billion7497. For the first seven months of 2026, cash remittances totaled $19.54 billion, up 2.3 percent from $19.09 billion a year earlier, while personal remittances — a broader measure that includes money sent through informal channels and remittances in kind — reached $20.39 billion, also up 2.3 percent64. The United States remained the largest source of cash remittances over the seven-month period at 39.7 percent, followed by Singapore at 7.1 percent, Saudi Arabia at 6.3 percent, Japan at 5.0 percent and the United Kingdom at 4.7 percent4187. RCBC Chief Economist Michael Ricafort noted that July's growth was "still among the slowest in more than 4 years or since May 2022," even as the monthly level stayed among the highest on record64.

The two data points landed on the same day and point in opposite directions for household finances: the peso's slide makes imported goods, fuel and travel more expensive for Filipino consumers, while remittances — one of the country's largest sources of foreign exchange and a direct support to household spending — continue to grow, if more slowly than in recent years. Household consumption grew 2.8 percent in the second quarter of 2026, down from 5.2 percent in the same period of 2025, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority97.

Key themes

  1. The peso closed at a record low of ₱62.86 to the dollar. The currency fell for a second consecutive trading day on September 14, weakening by 18 centavos from its previous record low of ₱62.68, as oil prices rose on Middle East tensions5053. Oxford Economics and Singapore-based Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. warned the peso could face further pressure in the coming months, citing weak external balances and the threat of higher food imports from El Niño53.
  2. July cash remittances hit a seven-month high of $3.24 billion. The figure was up 1.9 percent year-on-year and up from $3.04 billion in June, with land-based workers sending $2.65 billion and sea-based workers $590 million74. The seven-month total of $19.54 billion was 2.3 percent higher than the same period in 202564.
  3. GCash's parent company is preparing the largest stock listing in Philippine history. Mynt Inc. plans to raise between ₱75 billion and ₱80 billion through an initial public offering (IPO) — the first sale of shares by a private company to the public — on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), offering 9.2 billion shares at a maximum price of ₱10 each, with market indications pointing to a final price of ₱7.50 to ₱8.5022. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the government agency that regulates the country's capital markets, called the offering a demonstration that the Philippine market can handle large fundraisings22.
  4. A separate GCash feature is opening a preferred-share offering to retail investors. Property developer Arthaland Corporation is offering Series G and H preferred shares at ₱500 each from September 14 to 25 through GStocks PH, an investment feature inside the GCash app operated by broker AB Capital Securities Inc.529. Series G shares carry an annual dividend rate of 7.3260 percent and Series H shares 7.8105 percent44. Preferred shares pay fixed dividends and give holders priority over common shareholders when dividends are distributed5.
  5. The BSP warned the public about scammers impersonating its officials. The central bank said individuals have been using fake identification cards bearing the names, photographs and forged signatures of BSP officials and staff to solicit deposits in exchange for faster recovery of lost money. The BSP said it does not ask for donations or collect funds for this purpose and advised the public not to send money, transfer funds or share personal account details in such situations.
  6. Banks and regulators flagged geopolitical tensions, cyberattacks and supply-chain disruptions as the top risks to financial stability. The Financial Stability Coordination Council (FSCC) — a body that brings together the BSP and other regulators to monitor threats to the financial system — surveyed financial institutions in July on risks over the next 12 to 24 months and three to six years52. FSCC Chairman and BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. said the system "remains well-positioned to absorb shocks," citing sound capital and liquidity positions5467.
  7. The Development Bank of the Philippines ramped up deposit gathering to fund more lending. DBP President and CEO Michael de Jesus said the state-owned bank's deposit base grew 15.51 percent to ₱413.41 billion in the second quarter from ₱357.91 billion a year earlier40. DBP is the country's 10th-largest bank, with total assets of ₱1.036 trillion, and finances infrastructure, small and medium enterprises, environmental projects and social services40.
  8. A government lending program for calamity-affected farmers and fisherfolk was launched in Pampanga. The Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Credit Policy Council (DA-ACPC) introduced the Agricultural Rehabilitation, Emergency Credit, and Operational Viability for Economic Restoration (Agri-RECOVER) Program on September 14 in Angeles City7175. The program provides emergency financing for daily needs, livelihood restart funds and credit relief for existing borrowers among small farmers, fisherfolk and micro and small agricultural enterprises71.

How the narratives stack

Dominant: The peso's record-low close and the remittance data dominated the day's financial coverage, appearing across at least eight outlets in the captured set, including Manila Bulletin, Daily Tribune, ABS-CBN News, DZME1530, BNC Bilyonaryo, The Voice Newsweekly, Head Topics and Klajoo505364748797416068. The peso story carried the heaviest coverage value in the set: the Manila Bulletin report on the currency's pressure from oil and El Niño was worth an estimated ₱642,752 in advertising-equivalent terms, and the Klajoo report on the record close was valued at ₱66,1985350. The remittance story was covered by at least six outlets, with the Manila Bulletin's July remittance report valued at ₱290,75274. The two stories are linked: remittances are a key source of the foreign exchange that supports the peso, and their continued growth — even at a slower pace — provides some cushion against further depreciation.

Counter-narrative: The GCash IPO story presented a more optimistic view of the Philippine financial system's capacity. The SEC's characterization of the Mynt listing as proof that the capital market can handle massive fundraisings ran counter to the day's currency and external-balance concerns22. The Daily Tribune's report on the IPO quoted Philstocks Financial research manager Japhet Tantiangco saying investors are "really looking towards these IPOs" and that successful listings could "revive investor sentiment" and invite more participation11. The GCash-Arthaland preferred share offering added a second data point to the same theme: retail investors gaining easier access to capital markets through a mobile app52944.

Emerging: The BSP's warning about impersonation scams and the FSCC's risk survey both pointed to a financial system under pressure from fraud and external threats. The BSP said scammers are using fake IDs with the names and forged signatures of central bank officials to solicit deposits. The FSCC survey, conducted in July, found that banks and other financial institutions see geopolitical tensions, cyberattacks and global supply-chain disruptions as key risks over the next 12 to 24 months and three to six years52. Separately, Smart Communications secured certification from the GSM Association (GSMA) — a global trade body for mobile network operators — for two network-based application programming interfaces (APIs) designed to help businesses detect account takeover and other fraudulent activity70. The certifications cover Smart's SIM Swap and Device Swap APIs, which let enterprise clients check whether a SIM card or device associated with a mobile number has recently been changed, a signal that can indicate fraud risk70.

Under-covered: The Agri-RECOVER program for calamity-affected farmers and fisherfolk was covered by two outlets in the captured set — Balen Porac Pampanga and Daily Tribune — with combined coverage value of ₱232,134717586. The program addresses a specific and recurring need: small farmers and fisherfolk who lose income and assets to typhoons and other calamities and often lack access to formal credit. Its launch in Pampanga as part of the Handog ng Pangulo program, which brings government services directly to communities, suggests the government is treating agricultural credit as a priority, but the story received far less attention than the peso and remittance data71.

Platform insights

Facebook: The BDO Kabayan Facebook Page won an Award of Merit in the Social Media category at the Philippine Quill Awards for the second consecutive year, this time for its campaign "Alagang Kabayan: Where Every Kabayan Belongs."47 The page, run by BDO Remit, shares financial tips, remittance updates and content designed to help overseas Filipino workers make informed decisions about their finances47. The recognition highlights how banks are using social media to reach overseas Filipinos, a community that sent home $3.24 billion in July alone74. The BDO Kabayan page's back-to-back win suggests consistent engagement with an audience that is geographically dispersed but financially connected to the Philippines.

X (formerly Twitter): The platform carried political commentary on artificial intelligence regulation, with Senator Jon Ossoff accusing President Donald Trump of being "compromised" on AI safety due to his son's venture firm's investments in AI companies6596. Trump wrote on Truth Social that "AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX."96 The exchange drew coverage from Yahoo Philippines and other outlets, though it sits outside the core financial story of the day6596.

Reddit and YouTube: No significant activity was captured on these platforms in the monitored set for this topic.

Key voices and communities

Central bank and regulators: The BSP was the most active institutional voice, releasing the July remittance data, warning about impersonation scams and, through Governor Eli Remolona Jr., chairing the FSCC meeting that assessed risks to financial stability7454. The SEC weighed in on the Mynt IPO, with Chairman Francis E. Lim calling the offering "a most welcome development" that demonstrates the capital market's capacity22. These institutions set the tone for how the day's financial news was framed: cautious optimism about the system's resilience, paired with warnings about external pressures and fraud.

Market analysts and economists: Jonathan Ravelas, senior adviser at Reyes Tacandong & Co., appeared on ANC's Market Edge program and identified what he called the "OIC" — oil, interest rates and the currency — as the three factors investors should watch. He said there was "no good news" expected short-term on any of the three and that addressing inflation is needed, especially given the country's reliance on imports. RCBC's Michael Ricafort provided context on the remittance data, noting the slower growth rate64. Philstocks Financial's Japhet Tantiangco commented on the IPO's potential to revive investor sentiment11.

Overseas Filipino workers and their families: This community is both the subject of the remittance data and the audience for financial education efforts like the BDO Kabayan Facebook Page47. The $3.24 billion sent home in July represents money that flows directly into household consumption, making overseas workers a critical part of the domestic economy97. The BSP's data showed land-based workers sent $2.65 billion and sea-based workers $590 million in July74.

Digital finance platforms: GCash, through its parent Mynt and its lending arm Fuse, was a central presence in the day's news. The Mynt IPO, the Arthaland preferred share offering through GStocks PH, and Fuse's 10-year anniversary all positioned the platform as a bridge between ordinary Filipinos and formal financial services22523. Fuse Financing Inc. marked a decade of lending, citing BSP data that only 16 percent of Filipino adults can secure formal loans from banks and other regulated lenders23.

Farmers and fisherfolk: The Agri-RECOVER program launch in Pampanga brought this community into the day's financial news, though with less coverage than the peso and remittance stories7175. The program targets small farmers, fisherfolk and micro and small enterprises in agriculture who were affected by recent calamities71.

Narrative streams

The peso's record low and the external pressures behind it

The peso's close of ₱62.86 to the dollar on September 14 was the weakest in the currency's history, following an 18-centavo decline from the previous record low of ₱62.68 set on September 115053. The decline was driven by a combination of factors: a strong US dollar, elevated global oil prices amid Middle East tensions, and persistent local demand for dollars50. Oxford Economics economist Yash Adwani wrote in a September 14 report that external positions "look weak in India and the Philippines," putting depreciation pressure on their currencies, and noted that the peso and Indian rupee have been two of the worst-performing emerging market currencies since the start of the war in the Middle East53. OCBC warned that El Niño could add further strain by increasing food imports, which would require more dollars to pay for53.

The read for the sector is that importers, consumers and businesses with dollar-denominated obligations face higher costs, while exporters and families receiving remittances in dollars get more pesos for each dollar sent home. The BSP is expected to watch for disorderly movements, but the trader quoted in the Klajoo report noted that reaching 63 pesos per dollar is different from staying there, suggesting the central bank may tolerate the level if the movement is orderly50. The peso's slide also complicates the BSP's inflation-fighting task: a weaker currency makes imported goods more expensive, which can feed into consumer prices.

Remittances reach a seven-month high but growth slows

Cash remittances in July reached $3.24 billion, the highest monthly total since December 2025, according to BSP data released on September 157497. The figure was up 1.9 percent from $3.18 billion in July 2025 and up from $3.04 billion in June74. Land-based workers sent $2.65 billion, up 2.1 percent year-on-year, while sea-based workers contributed $590 million, up 1.3 percent74. Personal remittances, which include informal channels and remittances in kind, reached $3.6 billion, up 2 percent from $3.53 billion a year earlier74.

For the first seven months of 2026, cash remittances totaled $19.54 billion, up 2.3 percent from $19.09 billion in the same period of 2025, while personal remittances reached $20.39 billion, also up 2.3 percent64. The United States remained the largest source at 39.7 percent of cash remittances, followed by Singapore at 7.1 percent, Saudi Arabia at 6.3 percent, Japan at 5.0 percent and the United Kingdom at 4.7 percent4187. The BSP said the continued increase supported household consumption and domestic economic activity, highlighting remittances as an important source of household income and external financing68.

Ricafort's observation that July's growth was among the slowest in more than four years adds a note of caution64. Household consumption grew 2.8 percent in the second quarter of 2026, down from 5.2 percent in the same period of 2025, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority97. The read for the sector is that remittances remain a reliable source of foreign exchange and household income, but their slower growth rate means they are providing less of a boost to consumption than in previous years. For banks and financial institutions, the remittance corridor remains a key business line, and the BDO Kabayan Facebook Page's Quill Award recognition shows how institutions are competing for the loyalty of overseas Filipinos and their families47.

GCash's parent company prepares the largest IPO in Philippine history

Mynt Inc., the parent company of e-wallet GCash, is preparing an initial public offering that could raise between ₱75 billion and ₱80 billion, making it the largest fundraising event in the history of the Philippine Stock Exchange22. The company and its selling shareholders will offer 9.2 billion shares at a maximum price of ₱10 per share, though market indications point to a final price between ₱7.50 and ₱8.5022. Original shareholders, making up 90 percent of the total, are holding onto their stakes and not selling in the offering22. The Daily Tribune reported the planned IPO as a ₱92.3-billion listing, citing the maximum price and share count11.

SEC Chairman Francis E. Lim said the offering "demonstrates that the Philippine capital market has the capacity" to handle large fundraisings22. Philstocks Financial research manager Japhet Tantiangco said investors are "really looking towards these IPOs" and that if they perform well, "there's the possibility that they could revive investor sentiment, and they could invite more investor participation"11. The IPO comes as the Philippine stock market has been sluggish, with the benchmark index barely holding onto the 6,000 level and declining 1.11 percent on September 15, according to ANC's Market Edge program.

The read for the sector is that a successful Mynt listing would give the PSE its largest-ever fundraising and could draw retail investors back into equities, but it also sets a high bar: if the shares perform poorly after listing, it could discourage other companies from pursuing IPOs and further dampen market sentiment. The offering also puts GCash, already the country's dominant e-wallet, in a position to use public-market capital to expand its financial services ecosystem, which includes lending through Fuse Financing Inc.23.

GCash opens Arthaland's preferred share offering to retail investors

Property developer Arthaland Corporation is offering Series G and H preferred shares at ₱500 each through GStocks PH, an investment feature within the GCash app operated by broker AB Capital Securities Inc.529. The offer period runs from September 14 to 25, according to most reports, though Malaya Business Insight listed the period as September 14 to 18445. Series G shares carry an annual dividend rate of 7.3260 percent and Series H shares 7.8105 percent, subject to the terms of the issue44. Preferred shares pay fixed dividends and give holders priority over common shareholders when dividends are distributed, making them a comparatively predictable, income-focused investment5.

The offering is part of a broader push to make stock investing more accessible to Filipinos who have traditionally needed a separate brokerage account to participate in public share offerings5. By integrating the offering into the GCash app, which has millions of users, the platform aims to reduce the friction that has kept retail investors out of the capital markets29. The read for the sector is that digital platforms are becoming a distribution channel for capital-market products, which could broaden the investor base for Philippine companies but also raises questions about whether first-time investors understand the risks of preferred shares, including that they are not covered by deposit insurance and can lose value if the issuer's financial condition deteriorates.

The BSP warns about impersonation scams

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas issued a public warning about individuals posing as central bank officials or staff to solicit deposits in exchange for faster recovery of lost money. The scammers used fake identification cards bearing the names, photographs and forged signatures of BSP officials and staff, according to the warning. The BSP said it does not ask for donations or collect funds to facilitate the recovery of money and advised the public not to send money, transfer funds or provide personal account details or other financial information in such situations.

The warning comes as financial fraud remains a persistent concern in the Philippines. Smart Communications secured GSMA certification for two anti-fraud APIs that help businesses detect account takeover by checking whether a SIM card or device has recently been changed70. The FSCC's risk survey also identified cyberattacks as a key risk to financial stability over the next 12 to 24 months52. The read for the sector is that banks, e-wallets and telecoms are investing in fraud detection and prevention, but scammers continue to adapt, and public education remains a critical line of defense. The BSP's warning is a reminder that official institutions do not ask for money or personal information to resolve financial problems.

Regulators say the financial system can absorb shocks

The Financial Stability Coordination Council held its 46th Executive Committee meeting at the BSP headquarters in Manila and concluded that the Philippine financial system remains resilient despite elevated global risks5467. FSCC Chairman and BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. said "global risks remain elevated, with geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and volatile financial markets," but that "our financial system remains well-positioned to absorb shocks"54. The council cited sound capital and liquidity positions and prudent risk management, which allow financial institutions to continue lending to households and businesses54. Private-sector credit continues to grow at a steady pace, reflecting sustained household consumption and business financing needs54.

The FSCC's Survey of Salient Risks, conducted in July, gathered views from universal and commercial banks, rural and cooperative banks, thrift banks, other BSP-supervised institutions, non-bank financial institutions, insurers and other companies on threats over the next 12 to 24 months and three to six years52. The top risks identified were geopolitical tensions, cyberattacks and global supply-chain disruptions52. The read for the sector is that regulators are signaling confidence in the banking system's ability to withstand external shocks, which supports lending and investment, but the survey results show that financial institutions themselves see significant threats on the horizon. The peso's record low and the oil price pressures cited by Oxford Economics and OCBC are exactly the kind of external risks the FSCC is monitoring53.

Government lending program targets calamity-affected farmers and fisherfolk

The Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Credit Policy Council launched the Agri-RECOVER Program on September 14 in Angeles City, Pampanga, as part of the Handog ng Pangulo program, which brings government services directly to communities7175. The program provides emergency financing for daily needs, livelihood restart funds for farmers and fisherfolk, and targeted credit relief for existing borrowers, including micro and small enterprises in agriculture71. It aims to stabilize cash flow and support the rehabilitation of small farmers and fisherfolk affected by calamities71.

The launch in Pampanga, a major agricultural province, brought together government agencies and local farmers75. The read for the sector is that the program addresses a gap in formal credit for agricultural workers, who often lack the collateral and documentation that banks require. By combining emergency financing with credit relief, the program aims to prevent calamity-affected farmers from turning to informal lenders who charge high interest rates. The program's success will depend on how quickly funds are disbursed and whether the amounts are sufficient to cover the losses farmers and fisherfolk have incurred.

Other financial sector developments

Several other developments rounded out the day's financial news. Manulife Philippines appointed Erica Jurilla Santos as chief operations officer, effective September 15, putting her in charge of operations strategy, service excellence, digital adoption and customer-focused innovation128592. Santos joined Manulife Business Processing Services in 2022 and most recently led a 600-person team supporting the insurer's US operations12. Manulife Philippines President and CEO Rahul Hora said Santos would help strengthen operations and improve service as the insurer pursues growth plans in the Philippines12.

Skyro, a digital finance platform launched in the Philippines in 2022, began rolling out a refreshed visual identity as it expands beyond consumer financing into what it describes as an international multi-product financial ecosystem2172. Skyro has more than 7 million registered users, a credit portfolio exceeding $200 million and reached operating break-even in the first half of 202621. The company announced plans in August to expand into Saudi Arabia72.

Moody's Corporation acquired a minority stake in Philippine Rating Services Corporation (PhilRatings), a domestic credit rating agency, in a deal announced on September 1490. Moody's said the investment will support the development of Philippine debt capital markets while adding local market expertise to its global credit views90. The transaction comes as the Philippines prepares for more than $100 billion in planned infrastructure investments over the next three years90.

Tala, a global credit infrastructure company, published a piece advocating for more inclusive, data-driven digital lending in the Philippines, arguing that access alone is not enough and that true financial inclusion requires consumers to have the information, flexibility and control to make credit work for their lives2077. The piece was carried by multiple outlets, including Business Diary, Manila! Magazine, Woman, The Philippine Herald, Metropolitan and Page One207778798081.

DBP launched a "Save 2 Win" promotion to attract fresh deposits from individual and institutional clients, as the state-owned bank seeks to widen its funding base and support expanded lending40. DBP's deposit base grew 15.51 percent to ₱413.41 billion in the second quarter from ₱357.91 billion a year earlier40.

Conversation trajectory

The peso's path toward 63 per dollar will be tested in the coming weeks. The currency closed at ₱62.86 on September 14, and a trader quoted in the Klajoo report said 63 is "clearly within reach"50. The key question is whether 63 becomes a new trading range or just another level passed on the way to further weakness50. Watch for BSP intervention and for oil price movements tied to Middle East tensions. Observation window: the next two to four weeks, or until the next BSP policy meeting.

The Mynt IPO will move from announcement to execution. The offering is expected to be the largest in PSE history, and market watchers are looking to it as a potential catalyst for investor sentiment1122. The final price, expected between ₱7.50 and ₱8.50 per share, will be a key signal of demand22. If the listing performs well, it could encourage other companies to pursue IPOs; if it disappoints, it could further dampen market sentiment. Observation window: the coming months, through the listing date and the first weeks of trading.

The BSP's anti-scam warning may be followed by more enforcement or regulatory action. The central bank's public warning about impersonation scams comes as financial fraud remains a persistent concern. Smart's GSMA certification for anti-fraud APIs shows that telecoms and financial institutions are investing in detection and prevention70. Watch for whether the BSP issues further guidance or coordinates with law enforcement on arrests or prosecutions. Observation window: the next four to six weeks.

The FSCC's risk assessment will be tested by external developments. The council identified geopolitical tensions, cyberattacks and supply-chain disruptions as top risks over the next 12 to 24 months52. The peso's record low and oil price pressures are exactly the kind of external risks the FSCC is monitoring53. Watch for the next FSCC meeting or survey for an update on whether the council's confidence in the system's resilience holds. Observation window: the next quarterly FSCC meeting.

The Agri-RECOVER program's disbursement will determine its impact. The program was launched on September 14, and its success depends on how quickly funds reach farmers and fisherfolk71. Watch for data on the number of borrowers served and the amount disbursed. Observation window: the next three to six months.

Trigger events to watch: the BSP's next policy meeting, the Mynt IPO pricing and listing date, the next FSCC meeting, and any further movements in the peso-dollar exchange rate or global oil prices.

Response guidance

For banks and financial institutions: Communicate clearly about how a weaker peso affects customers. Importers and consumers will face higher prices for imported goods, while exporters and remittance recipients will benefit from a stronger dollar. Provide plain-language explanations of what the exchange rate means for different types of customers, and avoid jargon. For remittance customers, highlight the peso value of their dollars and explain how to compare fees and exchange rates across providers.

For e-wallets and digital finance platforms: The GCash IPO and the Arthaland preferred share offering through GStocks PH show that retail investors are being invited into capital markets through mobile apps225. Provide clear, accessible information about the risks of preferred shares and other investment products, including that they are not deposit-insured and can lose value. Avoid language that implies guaranteed returns. For lending products, emphasize transparent terms and responsible borrowing, especially as the BSP warns about scams.

For insurers: The appointment of Erica Santos as Manulife Philippines COO signals a focus on operations and customer experience12. Communicate how operational improvements translate into faster claims processing, better service and more reliable protection for policyholders. Health and life insurance products like Sun Life's SUN Fit and Well, which has sold more than 230,000 policies and paid over ₱600 million in claims as of June 2026, show that long-term protection products remain relevant to Filipino families84.

For government agencies and regulators: The BSP's anti-scam warning and the Agri-RECOVER program launch show two sides of the same coin: protecting consumers from fraud and expanding access to formal credit71. Communicate these initiatives in plain language, using local languages and community channels where possible. For Agri-RECOVER, provide clear information on eligibility, loan amounts, interest rates and repayment terms, and work with local government units and farmer organizations to reach affected communities.

For telecoms and technology companies: Smart's GSMA certification for anti-fraud APIs is a concrete example of how technology can help detect and prevent financial fraud70. Communicate how these tools protect customers and businesses, and provide guidance on how customers can protect themselves from SIM-swap and account-takeover fraud. Avoid technical jargon; explain what a SIM swap is and why it matters in simple terms.

For all financial sector communicators: The day's news shows a financial system under pressure from external forces but still functioning. Avoid alarmist language about the peso's record low, and avoid dismissing the concerns of consumers who are feeling the effects of higher import prices. Provide context: the peso has weakened before and recovered, remittances remain strong, and the banking system is well-capitalized. At the same time, acknowledge that slower remittance growth and weaker household consumption are real challenges6497.
